Many of you may wonder who Sylvia Robinson is. Ms. Robinson a singer, song writer and Hip-Hop pioneer. She worked with groups such as Micky and Sylvia, who debuted with their hit “Love Is Strange.” She also played in the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing. She produced the song “Love On a Two-Way Street” for the Moments in 1970. She was born Syliva Vanderpool, but later went onto to marry Joe Robinson.

Her and her late husband were the founders of Sugar Hill Records in 1979 and went on to release the hit “Rappers Delight” performed by the Sugar Hill Gang. Her oldest son, Joey, was a member of the group. The label also signed Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, who had the hit “The Message,” which was later sampled by Ice Cube on his 1993 album Predator with “Check Yo Self.” Artists such as Kanye West and Alicia Keys sampled music from her as well.

Ms. Robinson was found dead at the age of 76 from complications of Congestive Heart Failure. The funeral is set for October 11th.

R.I.P Sylvia Robinson and thank you for all that you’ve done in the pioneering of Hip-Hop! You will be greatly missed. Now let’s reminisce with a little “Rappers Delight” after the jump. Continue reading

Back To The Streets

We’ve started something new. Every week we’re going Back To The Streets to reminisce with who helped to pave the way for the Rap and Hip-Hop industries. This week, I chose Ice Cube. The classic “Check Yo Self” which was off Cube’s 1993 infamous Predator album.

The beat was sampled from Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five which featured Grandmaster Melle Mel and Duke Bootee‘s “The Message”. Ice Cube played a huge part in the West Coast pioneering of the Rap game and paved the way for artists such as Game and Nipsey Hussle. What are your favorite Cube songs?

40 Glocc called up his westcoast soldiers for this one. E-40, Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, Xzibit and Siven spit their Golden State fire in “Welcome To California (Remix)”. Cameos from Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Ice Cube, Ice T, Alchemist, Master P, Nipsey Hussle, WC, Mistah Fab, Don P, Philthy Rich and the dude who played Debo in the Friday movies. Plus they throw up a tribute to Nate Dogg at the end. Some of the cameos I can’t explain. Master P isn’t from Cali nor is Philthy Rich.

Here is the lead single from WC‘s Revenge Of The Barracuda which drops on March 8th. I really want a new Westside Connection album, but for now the closest we’re gonna get is when Dub and Cube work together on tracks like this.

Come to think of it I’d be down for a Westside Connection album featuring some new rappers like Maylay too… Who’s with me? Drop some names you’d like to see in a new Westside Connection group…
