If you watched the “Jay-Z at Summer Jam” video we posted [watch here], you saw T-Pain up on stage with Jigga as he performed “Death Of Autotune” live on stage.
What happened was, Jay-Z was a surprise performer at the show, and as if to defy that AutoTune or his style was getting murdered, T-Pain ran up on stage and stood next to the rapper, kind of awkwardly.
It turns out that this was totally unplanned and Hov had no idea T-Pain was going to do it.
“This is crazy, ’cause I didn’t know where T-Pain came from,” Jay revealed to Angie Martinez. “I look and I see somebody to my right and I swear I thought it was a fan and he was coming to hug me. I’m not even lying, not trying to be funny or take shots. I thought this person ’cause I didn’t see who it was ’cause he was coming to hug me and I thought all right, that’s some cool rock star stuff and then I seen people move again and I look back again and think ‘Is that…’ I guess he wanted to get close like ‘Not me.’ But it’s really not him. It was a little awkward and it was cool. I don’t mind sharing a little bit… He didn’t mean any harm, he was just embracing the record… I’m not saying AutoTune is wack… I’m not saying that, I just put a soundtrack to it, I put a voice to it. If people wasn’t feeling this way then the record wouldn’t work the way it would… The culture is bigger than the politics.”
After finishing the song, Jay marched off stage exclaiming a final “good riddance!”
And yet T-Pain, who repopularized the use of AutoTune in the first place, doesn’t seem to get it and had this to say after the show:
“That affected me in a great way, man. I made sure I honored him as a great song writer…that’s like the best song I heard in a couple years, man. And it’s great that somebody that important stepped up and vouched for me.”
Vouched for you? The damn song is called “Death Of Autotune!”
